Know Top 5 Common Running Injuries

A person who goes for running every day ensures the overall well-being of his/her system. Running is known as one of the most popular ways to be fit and to maintain a healthy weight. Running is amazing for anyone who wants to stay fit and healthy but there are few things that can leads to injuries while running, and it is important to know what types of injuries might happen to you.

According to some studies, nearly 80% of injuries are caused due to repetitive stress, and some of the causes behind sudden injuries are torn muscles or sprained ankle as well.

And, now it’s time to know some of the most common running injuries that happen during running.  

Most Common Types of Running Injuries

1.  Runner’s knee syndrome is also known as patellofemoral happen in the knee or you can say around your kneecap. This is one of the common sports injuries that happen during jumping or running.

If you have weakness around your knee area and in your hips the chances of developing patellofemoral or say runner’s knee become high.

Symptoms of Runner’s Knee Injury

– Dullness in one or both the knees.

– And this starts increasing from mild to extremely painful.

– This injury gets even worse if you sit or exercise for a long period.

– This injury gets worse if you do squatting, climbing chair, and jumping.

– After some time of being stationary, this injury may lead to popping or cracking sounds.

2.  Achilles tendinitis: It is the second injury in the list. Achilles tendinitis injury creates inflammation of the tendon. Tendon is known to link our calf muscles to your heel. This will also help to increase the intensity of your running.

Achilles tendinitis happens especially during running when a person is trying to increase the running intensity. This injury higher the risk of rupturing your Achilles tendon, and if the injury is serious it may need surgery to repair it.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendinitis 

– You will feel a dull pain in the lower side of your leg above your heel.

– You will notice swelling in the Achilles tendinitis area.

– You will find it difficult to do movement while flexing your foot towards your shin.

– You will feel the warmth around the tendon.

3. Iliotibial band syndrome: This syndrome is also known as IT band syndrome. This syndrome is prevalent amongst runners and this syndrome happens because of the repetitive friction of the Iliotibial band against your leg bone. This is also a common type of running injuries

4. Shin Splints: In this type of injury the pain starts in the lower or in the front parts of the lower legs along with your shinbone. This injury mainly occurs when a person increases their running volume too quickly or while running on the hard surfaces.  

It is important to treat shin splints with rest, though in most of the cases shin splints are not serious. But still, this injury needs rest in order to recover fast and to avoid stress fractures.

Here are the symptoms of shin splints: 

– You will feel a dull pain in the inner or the front area of your shinbone.

– You will feel more pain if you do exercise.

– You will feel tenderness to the touch.

– You will also see mild swelling.

One can easily overcome this injury if they take rest and reduce their running frequency.

5. This is the fifth common running injuries known as Hamstring injuries. Hamstring works to decelerate the lower leg during the swing phase of your running cycle. The chances of developing hamstring injury become even high if your hamstrings are tired, tight, or weak.

This injury is less common amongst distance runners. Distance runners are less prone to experience sudden hamstring tear. Mostly the distance runners experience hamstring strains and this is caused due to the repetitive small tears in the connective and the fibers tissues of the hamstrings muscle.  

Symptoms of the Hamstring Injury

– You will feel pain in the back of the upper leg.

– You will feel tenderness while touching a hamstring muscle.

– You will feel stiffness and weakness in your hamstring muscle.
