A new baby brings so much joy and love in the house and it takes a lot to take care of a newborn, hence many women ignore their own health. This leads to excess stress and exhaustion.

It is not easy to take care of a new mother with the same care, nurturing, and love as she does for the newborn baby. But, it is important that a new mother’s health is not ignored because the old saying is true if the woman of the house is healthy, the whole house is healthy.

Therefore, today we will discuss four such tips for new mothers to live a healthy life even after giving birth by Dr. Sunitha Mahesh Consultant – Feto Maternal Medicine & Medical Director, Milann Fertility & Birthing Hospital, JP Nagar, Bangalore.

4 Tips for New Mother’s Health:

  • Nourishment: Childbirth is a process that causes both physical and mental stress because the woman goes through tremendous pain but you go through so many physical changes. It can take nearly six weeks to return to normalcy. A new mother needs more nourishment during the lactation period and therefore she needs to have proper well-balanced meals that contain essential carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals, protein and all sorts of essential nutrients. This will be helpful for both the newborn baby and new mother as well and prepare them for a healthy life in the upcoming years as well.
  • Regular exercise: It is recommended during pregnancy time and even after the pregnancy to do aerobic exercises. After childbirth, women should avoid strenuous exercises for at least 6 weeks when their body is recovering, but they can do some aerobic exercises. Women that had a normal delivery should start exercising sooner after childbirth. New Mothers should exercise for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week. This will keep them active for 20 to 30 minutes every day. In the initial days, new mothers should start with simple postpartum exercises that will help them gain major muscle groups and strengthen back and abdominal muscles.
  • Positive mind: Parenting is not an easy task, and in the initial days and years the newborn baby demands 24/7 care, observations, love and attention which is healthy for the child’s mind and overall growth. A lot many things might not be possible for the parent’s and especially women to do for themselves. This can be a hard time mentally, therefore it is better to focus on the good things and cheap thrills that make you happy. There are days when kids would like to go to bed without fussing, remembering those days and appreciating them. No matter what you go through remember you got the responsibility of the upcoming generation, how that upcoming generation will be like depends on your parenting.
  • Comfortable fabrics are essential: It is difficult to get some time for the new mother. So, try to wear clothes that are breathable, light in colour, loose fit and you get the breastfeed easily. Breastfeeding is the process where the baby comes in close contact with the mother’s skin. Look for comfort and avoid wearing tight uncomfortable clothes. If you are able to manage your time, try to be involved in activities that keep you joyful, like playing with your kids, knitting, dancing, listening to music, singing, meditation, anything you like. These activities will keep you positive and induce anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation changes to combat stress. Try to utilize the daytime when your baby is sleeping. You can do your office work, play, learn a new skill or finish some important chores as well.

We hope all the new mothers and their loved ones understand some of the important points they need to take care of in the post-pregnancy period.
